How Your Lawn Mower Affects Local Street Flooding

When a tropical system drops several inches of rain over Sanford in a matter of hours, the underground stormwater system must move millions of gallons of water away from neighborhoods. Public Works crews clear main lines year‑round, but a common bottleneck begins at the curb where storm drains can become clogged with yard waste such as grass clippings, leaves and hedge trimmings. When debris is left in the street gutter, the first wave of heavy rain washes it toward the nearest storm drain, where wet grass can mat together over the metal grate and form a dam. This blockage prevents water from entering the underground system, causing it to back up onto the asphalt, flood the street, block traffic and move toward low‑lying driveways and front yards. Residents can help keep the stormwater network clear by directing mower discharge chutes back toward their own lawns, sweeping or blowing any clippings or leaves that fall on the asphalt back onto the grass, and avoiding the intentional dumping of bags of yard waste, trash or chemical liquids into storm drains. Maintaining clean street gutters during regular lawn maintenance supports the infrastructure’s ability to keep water off streets and away from homes during heavy storms. Surplus Lots Program Helps Family Achieve Homeownership

LaTonya Riley, a lifelong Apopka resident, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2017 and faced years of surgeries and hospital stays while caring for her children. Like many families in Florida, she also needed affordable housing, a challenge for households that spend over 30 percent of income on housing. Orange County has invested more than $58 million in affordable housing since 2020, including the Surplus Lots Program that donates County‑owned vacant lots to nonprofit partners such as Habitat for Humanity. Riley entered Habitat for Humanity’s Homebuyer Program in 2023, completed the required sweat‑equity work and eventually received the keys to a new home. The program is designed to lower development costs and expand access to safe, affordable housing. Since its launch, Orange County’s Affordable Housing Trust Fund has helped create or preserve nearly 2,300 affordable housing units, including dozens of homes built on surplus lot donations. Habitat for Humanity officials say homeownership can change a family’s trajectory by providing stability, better health and improved outcomes for children. Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom spotlights the Central Florida Zoo’s Orianne Center for Indigo Conservation mission to save the Eastern indigo snake

A recent episode of a national wildlife television series turned attention to conservation work at the Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens, focusing on the zoo's Orianne Center for Indigo Conservation and its efforts to restore populations of the Eastern indigo snake, described as North America's longest native snake species. The center, led by Dr. James Bogan, is the only captive breeding facility for the species dedicated exclusively to restoring populations in areas where it has disappeared. The Eastern indigo snake is listed as a threatened species throughout the Southeast Coastal Plain and is now found primarily in southern Georgia and peninsular Florida. Population declines have been driven by habitat loss, habitat fragmentation and the decline of gopher tortoise communities, which provide shelter for the species. At the center, outdoor habitats for the breeding population include underground bunkers that simulate gopher tortoise burrows, offering cool retreats in summer and warmer shelter in colder months. Breeding season runs from October through January, with females laying between four and 13 eggs from April through June. Hatchlings are cared for at the center for about a year, then typically transferred to a partner agency for another year before release at Conecuh National Forest in Alabama or The Nature Conservancy's Apalachicola Bluffs and Ravines Preserve in the Florida Panhandle. In April 2025, 42 snakes were released at the Nature Conservancy site, followed by 44 in May at the Alabama site, bringing the total number returned to native habitat to nearly 500. A 2024-2025 winter-spring survey identified a female released in 2019 and 19 other snakes released between 2020 and 2024. Researchers also observed a six-foot-long male and two wild-born hatchlings. Press release issued by Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens: https://www.centralfloridazoo.org/mutual-of-omahas-wild-kingdom-spotlights-the-central-florida-zoos-orianne-center-for-indigo-conservation-mission-to-save-the-eastern-indigo-snake/ 🤖 AI-assisted content notice: This item was written with AI assistance from the source document linked above.
